Ramla Bay, a day at the beach!

Sunny, 25 degree centigrade and a nice breeze coming from the North: perfect day in Ramla Bay, probably the largest and nicest sandy beach of the island (if not all the islands!); on the North shore, at the foot of Nadur and Xhara, (two of the largest villages on Gozo – 3500 to 4500 people).

The beach is expansive by local terms; reddish sand, a nice contrast against the blue of the sea and the sky, and the white of St-Mary’s statue, erected there, for no other reason I suppose that the Gozitans are very devoted Catholics (indeed, 76% of the island voted against institutionalizing divorce, in a recent referendum, contrary to the rest of the country on Malta island who voted for!)

Planted our parasol (5 Euros) near the statue, on a stretch of the beach where there is less people as access to the water is made a little bit more arduous on account of some rocky ocean bed (a few meters before reaching the sand bed again). It’s 10 o’clock when we arrive, and the place is already somewhat crowded, with shouting kids enjoying the water and the waves; it will get crowdier until around 1pm when we leave (last time we were here was in the winter, and we had the place almost to ourselves!).

Came back to Fort-Chambray, driving through Nadur, which is getting ready for the big fiesta tomorrow; daily swim in the central pool (short of two laps to 2km today!) – to “complement” the daily run in the morning… Dinner at Jeffrey’s in the little courtyard – a first at this restaurant which closes in the winter, after a short spree down to the West extremity of the island, Dwejra past St-Lawrenz, to see once more the “Azur Window” with a dying sun as the backdrop.

Back “home” in time to catch the fireworks launched from the ridge of Nadur – wonderful view from a terrace at the Fort, looking North – an annual village event (every village has one!) which will be followed by the “procession” tomorrow night (hopefully this also marks the near end of these very noisy daily flairs launched throughout the day and the night that startle us every time – this for sure must be reminiscent, for older people, of the heavily bombing this country has known during WWII…)

All in all, a very nice and full day…
